From Print to Product: The Complete FDM Post-Processing Ecosystem — Sanding, Priming, Painting, Epoxy Coating, and Hydro-Dipping

Post-processing often accounts for 30–60% of total part cost in professional FDM workflows. We survey the full spectrum: abrasive methods (sanding grit progression 120→2000, tumble finishing media selection), chemical methods (acetone vapor, solvent dipping, epoxy resin coating), additive methods (filler primer, automotive paint systems), and hybrid techniques (hydro-dipping, electroplating). Each method is evaluated for surface quality improvement, time cost, material compatibility, and effect on mechanical properties.

Post-processing seringkali 30–60% dari total biaya FDM — tetapi inilah yang membedakan “printed part” dari “finished product.” Dari abrasif hingga kimia hingga aditif, kami mensurvei seluruh ekosistem.

Metode Abrasif

  • Hand sanding: Grit 120→240→400→600→800→1000→1500→2000. Waktu: 15–60 menit. Material removal: 0.1–0.3 mm.
  • Wet sanding: Air sebagai lubricant. Mengurangi dust, mencegah clogging.
  • Tumble finishing: Media + rotating drum. Batch processing parts kecil. 2–24 jam.

Metode Kimia

  • Acetone vapor smoothing: ABS/ASA only. Lihat artikel #9.
  • Solvent dipping: Lebih agresif, risk over-dissolution. Tidak untuk precision parts.
  • Epoxy resin coating: XTC-3D. Mengisi layer lines, menambah strength. Cure 2–24 jam.

Metode Aditif

  • Filler primer: Automotive spray. 2–3 coats. Hasil: surface siap paint.
  • Automotive paint: Primer → base coat → clear coat. Profesional finish.
  • Hydro-dipping: Water transfer printing untuk pattern kompleks.
